    Pride in Ignorance

Why are so many people happy to not know. "Ignorance is bliss" seems to explain it all, but there's more to it. Why is society generally anti-intellectual? Read on to find out...

    Everything is fine...

Most people seem to think everything is fine in the world. They would rather ignore the facts (global warming, reasons for terrorism, dangers of reliance on foreign energy, etc...) and be ignorant of what is really going on. Now, I admit that I don't know what's really going on, but I have some ideas, and they scare me.

I was going to write a whole big post about this idea, but then I found Dave Pollard's article and realized he's basically already covered it, in a slightly different, but much better way. He also ends with a challenge to the bloggers (the new media). I think Dave is a littler more optimistic than I am. That's why I like to read his work, maybe it will rub off on me.

    :o)

    Snippits

To tempt you go read his article ;o)

    • In this era of anti-intellectualism and learned helplessness, the media, and we in the alternative media, have a responsibility to inform and engage the public on matters that are important and on vanguard thinking about these matters, even if they're difficult and make the public uncomfortable.
    • Brockman explains: "Throughout history, only a small number of people have done the serious thinking for everybody."
    • In a world of immense scarcity, in which time is the scarcest commodity of all, this vicious cycle of anti-intellectualism is perfectly understandable.
    • But today we are entrained with learned helplessness, convinced that understanding and sharing and coming up with great ideas and thinking seriously about them is a largely useless activity.

Please go read Dave's article. It might change how, or what, you choose to think about.
