    Homeschooling Philosophy

by Skeeter Murphy last modified 2006-04-09 02:30 AM

We planned on homeschooling our kids since they were born and learning has always been a natural part of living together. We have supported out kids through learning to walk, to talk, to know their colors, shapes and ABC's. Now that our oldest is "school age" we will continue to learn and grow together just as we did in his "pre-school" years of life!

    Our Philosophy

While there are many ways to apporach homeschooling, our lives are a mixture of several different methods. For the most part, we believe that learning happens in our daily lives and that is where it belongs. We learn math by mixing recipes, adding and subtracting prices at the grocery store, and figuring how big a cake we will need to bake in order to feed all the birthday party guests. We read signs, posters, window messages, licence plates and much more when we are out and about. We follow bugs in the garden to see where they go and what they do. And we supplement this with lots and lots and LOTS of reading! When we want more structure we find activity books or even text books to fill in the gaps.

And at the base of this is the belief that true learning only happens when there is curiosity. Our job as parents/educators is to foster curiosity and provide information and opportunity.
